The Giant and the Tailor

Once upon a time, there was a tailor who was known far and wide for his boasting, though not for his skill. One day, he decided it was time to leave his workshop behind and see more of the world. So, he packed his things and set off, wandering over hills and through valleys, exploring every path he could find.

On his journey, he spotted a steep hill in the distance, and beyond it, a towering structure that seemed to touch the sky. The tower rose above a dark and wild forest, and lightning cracked in the distance. "What in the world is that?" exclaimed the tailor, his curiosity getting the better of him. Without hesitation, he marched toward the tower.

But as he drew closer, his eyes grew wide with wonder and fear. The tower had legs! And, with a single leap, it jumped over the hill and landed before him. The tower was, in fact, an enormous giant!

The giant’s thunderous voice boomed, "What do you want here, you tiny flea?"

The tailor, trembling but quick to think, answered, "I’m just looking around, hoping to find some work to earn my bread."

The giant looked down at the little tailor and grinned. "You want work? Fine. You can work for me. How does this sound? Every year, you'll get three hundred and sixty-five days of work, and one more on a leap year. Does that suit you?"

The tailor, knowing he had little choice, smiled and replied, "That sounds fair enough." But deep down, he was already plotting his escape.

The giant wasn’t done. "All right, then. Fetch me a jug of water."

The tailor, ever the braggart, said with a smirk, "Why stop at a jug? Should I bring the whole well and spring along with it?"

The giant, not the brightest, grumbled to himself, "This fellow is no ordinary man. Maybe he has magic within him." And from that moment on, the giant began to fear the tailor.

When the tailor returned with the water, the giant gave him another task. "Go into the forest and cut some wood."

The tailor, full of swagger, asked, "Why not chop down the entire forest in one go?"

Again, the giant muttered to himself, "He must be more powerful than he looks. What kind of sorcery does he possess?" The giant’s fear grew even stronger.

Next, the giant asked the tailor to hunt some wild boars for supper. "Why stop at a few? Should I bring a thousand boars in one shot?" the tailor quipped.

Terrified, the giant waved his hand and said, "Never mind, forget the boars. We’ll rest for the night."

That night, the giant lay awake, his mind racing with thoughts of how to rid himself of this strange, dangerous servant. By morning, he had a plan.

The next day, the giant led the tailor to a marsh surrounded by tall willow trees. He pointed to one of the branches and said, "Sit on that willow branch. Let’s see if you’re strong enough to bend it down."

The tailor, always ready to show off, sat on the branch and held his breath, making himself as heavy as possible. Slowly, the branch bent down, but as soon as the tailor had to breathe again, the branch snapped back and flung him high into the sky.

Up and up the tailor flew, so high that he vanished from sight. The giant, seeing this, laughed with relief. "At last! That troublesome sorcerer is gone!"

And as for the tailor, if he hasn’t come back down, he might still be floating somewhere in the sky.
